The objectives of IBC are:

  • To produce, accumulate and spread theoretical and practical knowledge about different forms of tenure and management of private common properties and spaces in Peru and their relation to public common properties and private individually owned properties.

To achieve this objective, IBC proposes to 1) carry out scientific research to provide original information for the best understanding of the phenomena under study, 2) create an intellectual space for exchange and reflection between researchers from the institute and other national and foreign institutions with similar interests and 3) the creation of georeferenced digital databanks and a specialized library on management of common properties and spaces.

  • To create bridges between the social sciences and the natural sciences, as well as bridges to agencies interested in socioeconomic development and environmental conservation, for the sake of the vital relation that exists in Peru between good management of common resources, services and spaces, the conservation of ecosystems, biodiversity and sustainable development.

To achieve this objective IBC proposes: 1) integrating social and natural sciences in study and research groups and on the institute’s own board of directors 2) establishing active agreements for cooperation with various schools of Peruvian and foreign universities, 3) carrying out research projects that integrate both perspectives in the formulation of themes and the interpretation of results and 4) using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in the conception and analysis of the social and ecological aspects of the common management of ecosystems and their resources.

  • To contribute to the formation of a new generation of students, researchers and promoters of good management of common resources, services and spaces in Peru.

To achieve this objective, IBC suggests: 1) promoting the participation of researchers from the institute in teaching activities and advising bachelor and graduate theses for Peruvian universities, 2) sponsoring visits by advanced university students from other countries to Peru and 3) carrying out seminars, short courses, and workshops for different audiences including the owners in common.

  • To provide consultant services to those in charge of common resources, services and spaces for the planning, economy and sustainable management of common properties and resources.

IBC proposes achieving this objective through: 1) knowing the demand for and supply of services, 2) appraising services with social criteria that at the same time are sustainable for the institution, 3) signing contracts between the institute and the groups of owners of common properties who require such services.

  • To promote public reflection on the dynamic relation between private common property, public common property and private individual property resources, services and spaces.

It is proposed to carry out debates through: 1) publishing and diffusing research findings linked with the institute, 2) publishing articles and editorials on this theme in national newspapers and magazines, 3) organizing seminars, roundtable discussions and other forms of public meetings and 4) providing consultancy to the State and to the common owners in the preparation of norms on the regulation of tenure and management of private common properties and spaces, in the application of these norms and in the legal regulation of common properties and spaces.
